Music & Art High School ~ circa 1975

Music & Art High School in the seventies
The mind swells with sweet memories
If you was there – You know what I mean
Well if you weren’t – I must explain

From the five corners of New York City
The student body did come
To those lovely gothic towers
In the middle of Spanish Harlem

We had our own miniature Central Park
Complete with boulders and trees
Around which lots did perfect
The tossing of CPI frisbees

Friends back in Queens were jealous of me
Cause in the subway I went daily, off to the ‘city’
Music and Art High School was truly a trip
Everybody had their own way of getting a kick

On “The Rock” someone would always have music
The charcoal, or rapidograph pen
Honing their craft, latest masterpiece, or the newest version
Sculptures, acrylics, oil, or ink

The High School of Music and Art had all one could think
Latin Trumpets blasted from high on the wall with flare
Some guy with a Banjo was always playing up there
My buddies and I would do skits of Monty Python
Or perhaps a Zappa sing-a-long
We were all very different
And we all got along

Soothing Flutes and French Horns
Sailed notes thru the breeze
While down in the bushes
We did what we pleased

Singers vocalizing on those long steps of stone
Or an artist sitting quietly working on there own
Any kind of art – It was made
Any kind of music – It was played

The CUNY lunch cathedral was the space
To cut, to buy and sell smoke
An  indoors hang out place
You could always find a friendly face

Big band slingers, Opera Singers
Painting brush Swingers
All singing the song of Peter Pan
We’d all go our own way soon enough
We all had our own plans

The student body was New York City
Music and Art High School of Harlem, USA
We made New York City Glow
With our wide eyes
We made New York City Glow
Just a wee bit brighter

Defining in our minds daily the hip and the cool
That was the place Music and Art High School
In the seventies along with Classical Squares
Gospel Soulsters, Acid Hippies, and Rock N Rollers
We were a New York City Rainbow

  1. I’ve been surfing on-line more than 3 hours lately, yet I never discovered any attention-grabbing article like yours. It’s lovely value enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and bloggers made excellent content as you probably did, the net might be much more useful than ever before.
